The free Kokoda App launched by the RSL & Services Clubs Association to mark the 70th anniversary of the Kokoda campaign is now available in Android and iPhone format.
Conceived by author, Patrick Lindsay, also chairman of the Kokoda Track Foundation, the app will let users get a feel for what the Diggers would have been up against with detailed rendering of the terrain, first-hand video accounts, and historical footage from the battle for Australia.
“It will be the first time people will be able to walk the Kokoda trail from home,” Mr Lindsay said.
“You’ve never seen Kokoda like this before.”
The app also shows the campaign from both the Australian and Japanese points of view.
The project has taken more than 12 months to develop and has cost around $80,000 and will be launched via the project’s media partner, News Limited, to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Kokoda Campaign for Kokoda Day 3 November 2012.
Production of the Kokoda App was funded by a number of member clubs of the RSL & Services Clubs Association, assisted by NSW RSL State Branch and several local RSL sub-branches.
RSL & Services Clubs Association CEO, Garrie Gibson, said that the Kokoda campaign was one of the most significant campaigns in Australia’s history after Gallipoli.
“The Association saw the app as a fitting way to tell the story of the heroics and sacrifices of our diggers and contribute to 70th anniversary of the battle,” Mr Gibson said.
“The Kokoda campaign does not get near enough exposure to our young people in schools so we are hoping that this app will become a key tool in the education process.”
“But more than that, the app is a resource for Australians of all ages to learn more of the Kokoda story and ensure that we never forget the sacrifices of our forebears and ensure that those ANZAC traditions on which this country was forged will never be forgotten, particularly through our network of clubs.”
