The Angels of the Battlefield – The Story of the ANZAC nurses in WW1

ANZAC Day is a day when we remember the sacrifice that our servicemen made in conflicts past and present. However, this year we would like to invite you to also remember those “other ANZACS” the some 3,000 nurses who also served in the Great War

Angels of the Battlefield is a feature-length (90 mins) documentary is the first ever on the ANZAC nurses and seeks to recognise their exceptional bravery and courage. In the introduction noted Australian historian, Tom Keneally, articulates his belief that the nurses deserve to be up on the ANZAC monuments alongside the men.

Presented in an informal and entertaining Who Do You Think You Are?  style – two young women, representing the generation who will help keep the Anzac spirit alive for the next 100 years, go in search of Sisters Nellie Morrice and Kitty Porter.

During two highly personal and emotional journeys of discovery, our presenters visit the New South Wales towns of Sutton Forest and Milton, where our nurses were born and brought up. The focus then moves to Sydney where they both trained as nurses at The Royal Prince Albert and Sydney Hospitals. At the outbreak of war in 1914 both enlisted for service. The film presents a detailed account of what the nurses experienced at the front- line where they were often working under fire and enormous pressure.

Both stories are illustrated through some incredible personal archive – including a series of photos taken illegally by Nellie – interviews, historical re-enactments and location footage shot in Turkey and France, which all help to bring alive and personalise their stories.

The film is available to be shown in all RSL Clubs in NSW. Promotional material and a simple link to access the film can be made available to those wishing to participate. The following trailer is a short sample of the film here.
